Burgers and Johnnies are no longer a threat to Birmingham
Recently West Midlands Police stated that the Infamous Street gangs ‘The Burger Bar Boys’ and ‘The Johnsons’ are no longer a threat to the safety of our streets.
Recently West Midlands Police stated that the Infamous Street gangs ‘The Burger Bar Boys’ and ‘The Johnsons’ are no longer a threat to the safety of our streets.
In 2005, BBC Journalist Peter Wilson said:
“Birmingham’s notorious gangs are similar to the IRA by the way they terrorise the city with drive by shootings, intimidation and drug dealings.”
But now, 5 years later, West Midlands police officers are positive they have defeated the gangs in their war against gun crime thanks to a neighbourhood blitz that resulted in high profile gangsters serving lengthy sentences behind jail bars. The blitz also helped the police to take deadly weapons such as a Mac-10 machine gun away from our streets.
PC Anderson, from Thornhill road police station told the Birmingham Mail:
“We have created an atmosphere where people know if they are carrying guns they are going to go to jail for a long time.”
Birmingham Mail journalists continued in the article to assure its readers that the ‘Burgers’ and ‘Johnnies’ no longer posed a threat to the safety of our communities. Claiming that “They are no longer the organised mobs they were seven or eight years ago.”
Police officials are now confident that the city has distanced itself away from its unwanted image as a gun crime hotspot thanks to the blitz. The Police are now adamant that gang shootings in the city have decreased rapidly since they banged up leading members of the Burgers and Johnsons crew.
During the blitz, Tobias Grant, 27 from Handsworth and Tacumba Wheeler, 20 from Lozells were both caught with a loaded Mac-10 submachine gun in Aston. Mr Grant was convicted of possessing a gun with intent to endanger life and jailed for 14 years whilst Mr Wheeler was given a sentence of eight years after he was found guilty of possessing a prohibited firearm.
Judge Trevor Faber told the defendants:
“The public in the city of Birmingham, particularly those living in Handsworth, Lozells and Aston have the most grave concerns about the growth of gun crime. You must understand substantial sentences of custody will follow, not only to punish you for your involvement with this wicked weapon but to deter others.”
Police also claim to have recovered an arsenal of shotguns, fully loaded pistols and stun guns during the blitz. PC Anderson told the Birmingham Mail: “The last 18 months has been peaceful. Our recent success has been aided by people who are willing to pass on information about who has guns and where they are hidden. People are fed up with gangsters shooting each other, fed up of burying their own and fed up with what it was doing to the community where their children are growing up.”
Do you – the people that live in the inner city areas of Birmingham – now feel there is no longer a threat to the safety of the community? Are the police correct? Have Burgers and Johnnies been eradicated from the area? and you feel safer? Send us your views to: info@supatrax.com
