Skyla back for the crown

skyla01042010_100x100Skyla Grime was once one of the most versatile Mc’s emerging through the ranks of Birmingham’s grime scene. His sharp delivery and well structured wordplay earned him a place amongst Birmingham’s most elite spitters, but after a long break away from the recording, the word on every grime-head’s lips has been:

"What the hell’s happened to Skyla?" - Supatrax tracked him down.

Supatrax tracked down the Ladywood native to discuss, where he has been all this time, plans for his new mixtape, linking up with reggae legends Billy Ocean and Maxi Priest and a possible Chosen Onez reunion.

Before u read the interview check out Skyla’s tune Swag Surfing featuring Gorilla Sawnoff.

Skyla with Billy OceanSupatrax: “Skyla whats good, you gotta put people’s minds at rest and let them know where you’ve been at all this time.”

Skyla Grime: “I’ve been in Florida yuno, working with a media company called ‘Steady Image’. While I was over there, I was also networking and collaborating with underground and established artists.

Supatrax: “Yeah! So did u work with any big names?”

Skyla Grime: “I got contracted to travel over to Jamaica and film Billy Ocean a music video for his upcoming album. Billy and I got talking on the set and he introduced me to Maxi Priest and we did a quick link up in the lab. Look out for it.”

Supatrax: “Who are you feeling from Brum at the moment and who is the best Mc you’ve worked with?”

Skyla Grime: “I’m gonna say I rate Trilla for pioneering the baseline scene in the Midlands. NODB, Dapz, Sleeka, Spider, KRA, Vectra and (S-Man from Hydro crew). Best Artist? Everyone I have worked with has brought something different so it’s hard to say. I’d probably Say P.Money or Gorrilla Sawnoff.

Check out Skyla’s track with London’s hottest up and coming Mc P-Money.

Skyla with Maxi PriestSupatrax: “Chosen-Onez were once considered the best group in Birmingham. What has happened to them now?”

Skyla Grime: “members of the crew repeatedly were getting locked up so the crew fell apart...but the crew might be getting back together again this year.”

Supatrax: “Word on road is you’re working on a new mixtape, what can people expect from that?”

Skyla Grime: “Personally I’ve always taken music as a hobby like playing football and in a way I still do. The mixtape/promo I’m working on due to fan demand is called (Therapeutic Hobbie) which means Relaxing Hobby. Expect a little of everything rap, Grime etc...
