Fatal crash victim was brother of man stabbed earlier
The driver who died in the car crash on Dudley Rd in Winson Green was the brother of the young man stabbed outside a Smethwick nightclub earlier in the night.
The driver is named locally as Kevin Burris, from Smethwick aged 29.
Four passengers, believed to be in their 20s, suffered injuries in the smash, in the early hours of Friday, and were taken to City hospital and the Oak Trauma unit.
Police traffic officers briefly saw the car before the crash and have referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. An investigation will take place to see if the police had any influence on the crash.
Hours before Kevin died, a 21-year-old man was stabbed outside the Vibe nightclub in Summit Crescent, Smethwick. He was taken to City Hospital where he is now in a stable condition. The Birmingham Mail reported: A police source confirmed that the dead driver and stab victim were related saying: “They were brothers”.
As Supatrax earlier reported, word outta street is that the car was being chased when the driver crashed on Dudley Rd. This has not been confirmed by police or reported on in the regional mainstream press.
While the crash victims were being treated at City Hospital - only metres away from the crash, a fight broke out involving around 50 friends and relatives. The police closed the main entrances to Accident and Emergency from 12.15pm to 1.45pm on Friday.
A City Hospital spokesman said: “Police were called to deal with an incident on Friday.
“Friends and relatives of a patient gathered and feelings ran high.”
A 15-year-old boy appeared before Warley magistrates on Monday and was charged with attempted murder. He was remanded in custody.
Two other teenagers aged 16 and 17 have been bailed pending further enquiries.
